Imagine a child's eyes lighting up the first time he or she walks into a baseball stadium or sees the ocean. Not only can you be there when it happens, but you can be the reason it did. With the help of dedicated and fun volunteers, Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest is able to provide positive adult friendships for many youth. Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest has volunteer opportunities to fit any lifestyle or schedule. You can participate in the following:

A Big is a volunteer who spends time with his or her Little Brother or Sister 3 times a month for a minimum of one year. Our Big Brothers can be matched with a Little Brother and Big Sisters can be matched with either a Little Brother or Sister.

A Big Couple is a couple in a committed relationship who is matched with a Little Brother or Sister.

A volunteer, 18 years or older meets with the student on a one-on-one basis one hour per week in a structured school setting. Some of the activities that can take place in the schools are, sports, science projects, games, arts/crafts and cooking. A Big Brother Big Sister staff member will monitor the progress of each match relationship and provide support and suggestions to make sure the child's and the volunteer's needs are met.

A Teen Big, in the school-based program, is 16-20 years old, who is able to provide friendship and hang out with a young child for one hour once a week during the school year.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest has many one time volunteer opportunities available including our fundraiser - Bowl for Kids Sake and the Big For a Day program where volunteers are matched with a child on the wait list for a fun group activity.

Much time and effort goes in the effective matching of a volunteer with a child. Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest case managers spend time getting to know the volunteers and children in order to create a match that will be successful. A case manager is a professional staff member who is there to encourage, guide, and support the volunteer/child relationship.
