Safety first
From the first interview to the volunteer and child’s last meeting, our team of professional staff takes every precaution to ensure that every child in our program remains safe in the care of their Big Brother or Sister.
We start by interviewing the family and child to ensure we have a solid understanding of the family’s preferences for a volunteer. You know what’s best for your child.
We then look for the highest quality volunteers by performing a series of background procedures. Before a volunteer is matched with a child, the volunteer must be approved by our agency through the following prerequisites:
- Submit a written volunteer application
- Complete a 90 minute in-person interview
- Pass national background and driving record checks
- Pass personal and professional reference checks
- Receive family approval
- Attend a two and a half hour volunteer orientation focused on child safety, the role of a mentor, the family's expectations and the agency’s expectations
Our safety efforts do not stop when the volunteer meets the child. Every match is assigned a professional match support specialist to support the family and volunteer. The specialist checks in at least once a month as a resource for fun activities and assist with any questions.
